  • How Your Business Could Benefit from Used Forklifts

Finding the right forklift truck for your processes is not always easy. However, the ultimate decision can be made even more difficult once companies start to consider the option of used forklifts too. Whilst those businesses for whom money is no object (and these companies are becoming increasingly rare) may not balk at paying far more for the latest models and in turn boosting their image by showing the world that they can afford the very best assets, for most, the cost of buying a new vehicle will far outweigh the benefits.

  • Safety Tips for Forklift Drivers

Each year, thousands of accidents happen in workplaces involving forklift trucks. Whilst many of these do not lead to serious injuries, the number of those hurt in such incidents is still significant. In the US alone, 85 people die every year in forklift accidents, whilst a more conservative figure was seen in the UK in 2013, with just 6 fatalities arising. However, whilst fatality rates are declining in the UK, more still needs to be done. As such, once you have found the perfect forklift for your needs, it will then be wise to think about which safety precautions are most suitable for your business to ensure you do not add to these alarming safety statistics.

  • Demand for forklifts may be high among manufacturers

Forklifts may play an integral role in your firm’s operations. Without these vehicles, your organisation’s activities may quickly grind to a halt. Having a sufficient number of reliable trucks is particularly important during busy periods.

With this in mind, demand for used forklift trucks may be especially high at present among manufacturers. According to the latest Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index, UK manufacturing continued to grow strongly in October.

Following an index of 56.3 in September, a slightly lower but still impressive 56 was recorded in October. Anything above 50 indicates expansion.

Demand from overseas helped to boost the sector. Export orders increased at their fastest pace since February 2011. Firms reported higher workflows from a range of countries and regions, including Ireland, Asia, the US, mainland Europe, the Middle East and Russia.

Responding to the findings, senior economist at Markit Rob Dobson said: “Despite only accounting for less than 11 per cent of the economy, the current strength of growth seen in manufacturing means the sector will still provide a major boost to the economy in October, boding well for the strong pace of economic growth we saw in the second and third quarter being sustained into the fourth quarter.”

He added: “The survey suggests manufacturing output is growing at a quarterly rate of around one per cent to 1.5 per cent.”

Mr Dobson went on to claim that maintaining this level of expansion is important if Britain is to see “any real signs of the economy rebalancing”.

Also offering his response, David Noble from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply stated that manufacturers “swept” into the final three months of the year with a “steady wind behind them”.

If your firm is experiencing healthy demand, now could be a good time to invest in new equipment, potentially including forklifts.

  • Gas, electric or diesel forklift?

As with any vehicle, when purchasing a forklift truck you don’t want to rush into a decision without being clued up about what it involves. When choosing a forklift truck, the fuel type is an important factor as it’s not a case of cost; it’s a case of safety.

Your choice will start with working out if it’ll be used indoors, outdoors or a mixture as well as what you’ll be lifting and how heavy it will be. Once you’ve worked out the fuel type you’ll need, you can start working out the costs and making the most of second hand forklift truck availability.

    Diesel

Diesel forklift trucks have higher torque than their LPG counterparts and are capable of lifting very heavy loads. They aren’t at risk of low or empty batteries like electric forklifts and they can be fuelled in minutes as easily as pouring more diesel in. They are also long-lasting, durable machines and their heavy construction enables them to live long, reliable lives if properly cared for.

The downside with diesel though, is the fumes. Diesel forklifts can be happily used outside but should be avoided inside and in areas of poor ventilation. Smoke and fumes from the engine can be seriously harmful even with purifiers and must not be used in confined spaces.

    Gas and LPG

A more environmentally friendly option – LPG produces much lower emissions that diesel and is non-toxic. This means it can be used indoors with proper ventilation giving them more versatile abilities than diesel. LPG is also has no lead or soot if they are fitted with a 3-way catalyst giving it higher safety standards.

Although propane tanks are easy to change they may require frequent changing which raises the risk of possible related accidents. Prices are likely to rise as they are highly susceptible to the rise of fossil fuel prices.

    Electric

An ideal choice for confined spaces and indoor use, electric forklift trucks don’t have any exhaust emissions offering a relatively safer working environment. Because they are battery operated, they’re much quieter than diesel and LPG engines, giving them further indoor benefit. Electric forklifts also tend to be easier to operate, putting less physical strain on the operator.

The main disadvantage of an electric forklift is the recharge time. If you are operating with only one forklift, this could be a major problem depending on how often you need it but, managed effectively it need not cause disruption. It does require the installation of a battery charging station as well as the responsible and safe care and disposal of batteries.

Further, performance can be affected by the age of the battery and it isn’t always acceptable for outdoor use in particularly cold or wet weather.

    Usage assessment

First and foremost, an assessment of what, where and how much the forklift will be used should be undertaken. Once you have decided on the most appropriate fuel types you are ready to start looking at individual forklift trucks. Dealers will be experts and query them on anything you’re not sure of; that way you’ll be certain to get the most appropriate product for your company’s needs.

  • Why choose used forklifts...

If you’re in the market for a forklift truck, there’s one key decision you need to make—do you want to invest in a brand new model or opt for a used version? Well, we happen to think that the latter will be a far more beneficial choice, but don’t take our word for it. Read on to see why you should choose used forklifts and the benefits they can bring to your business…

    The ideal balance

Opting for a second hand forklift means you’re getting that ideal combination of quality and value, striking the right balance to offer the best of both. Brand new models can be incredibly expensive pieces of kit and, given businesses need to keep an eye on the bank balance these days, it’s often a much more prudent choice to go for used versions instead. You could save a huge amount of cash and if you choose wisely you needn’t be concerned with extortionate maintenance costs either, and with many used models being just as high quality as their brand new versions you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A lot of reputable dealers (such as us) specialise in offering second hand models, working hard to source those that are in excellent condition and spending time bringing them back up to standard, so you can buy in total confidence. As long as you make sure to do your research and only ever buy from leader suppliers you can’t go wrong, and if you bear in mind future running and maintenance costs you won’t have to spend a fortune later down the line either.

By choosing a used forklift you’re getting a model that’s just as reliable as its newer version without the usual price tag, so why wouldn’t you want to go second hand? There’ll be something for everyone too—whether you’re after a diesel model, electric, sideloader, heavy-duty versions or those built for smaller spaces you’ll find the used model to suit, and if you’re after the best you’ve come to the right place.

    Find the trucks you need

  • Getting the best from your used forklift

If you’re investing in a used forklift, congratulations—you’ve made a great decision! You’re getting a vehicle that can offer the same level of functionality and quality at much lower prices than a brand new model, but you still need to make sure you get the best from the new addition to your business. So how can you go about doing that? Well, here are a few points you need to bear in mind:

    • Research and thoroughly inspect your forklift before you make the final decision. The first step to getting the best from your vehicle is choosing wisely in the first place, and that means you need to spend time doing your research and inspecting your prospective truck. This ensures you’ll be making an informed decision and can get the one that suits your environment as well as your budget, and if you make sure to buy from a reputable dealer (such as us) you can be confident in getting a vehicle that will meet your standards.
    • Check the maintenance history and determine future costs. You want to make sure your vehicle has got a decent maintenance history so you can be aware of any recurring issues and can plan accordingly, and you’ll want to consider the cost of any spare parts and attachments that could need to be replaced later down the line (and don’t forget fuel costs either). Ideally you’ll want to get added warranties or guarantees from the supplier too, thereby ensuring you’ve got a high-quality truck and won’t have to spend over the odds should an issue arise.
    • Use it appropriately. Sounds obvious, but you need to make sure you use your forklift for what it was intended—pay close attention to capacity and height restrictions so you don’t overload or otherwise damage it, and always keep up with a proper maintenance routine to keep it going for years to come.
    • Invest in suitable forklift truck training for employees. Anyone that’s going to operate a forklift truck needs to undergo sufficient training before they can get behind the wheel to ensure they can use it effectively—failing to do so could not only mean you’re not getting the best from your truck (or your workforce) but it could be dangerous as well, and given the importance of meeting health and safety regulations you should always put training at the top of the agenda.

These are just a few ways you’ll be able to get the best from your used truck, but one of the most important things you can do is buy your vehicle from a reputable dealer with a fantastic range of high-quality used forklifts to offer something for everyone. That’s where we come in. We’ve got a wide range of second hand models for you to choose from with all of them being in excellent condition whilst offered at great value for money, so make sure to get in touch and you’ll be one step closer to making the most of your forklift.

  • Choosing the right forklift for your environment

Forklift trucks are an essential component in a whole range of industrial, retail and commercial environments, and choosing the right one to suit is a key part of business management. There are plenty of considerations you’ll need to bear in mind and a wide range of models that could be suitable accordingly, and here are just a few factors that will go into your final decision:

    • Space considerations. The amount of space you’ve got will always be an important consideration—if you’ve got a facility with narrow aisles or limited headroom you’ll need a forklift that can fit and manoeuvre easily, and in-line with that is the capacity of the truck itself. You need to strike the right balance between it being manoeuvrable and able to carry sufficient load, so always make sure you choose a model accordingly.
    • Application. The reason you need the forklift will be a primary consideration, and that will all come down to the environment you operate in. Will you be lifting pallets, piping, carpets or retail goods? How heavy are the products you’ll need to lift? Where will the forklift be operating? This will all determine the type of forklift you’ll need as well as any attachments required, and capacity will again come into it.
    • Gas, diesel or electric? There are plenty of fuel options to consider, and again, it all comes down to the environment you operate in. If you’ll be using the truck in a closed internal space chances are you won’t want to use gas and cope with exhaust fumes so an electric model would be ideal, whilst if you’re after a heavy-duty version you might want to go for diesel. Or, what about multi-fuel options for added flexibility? The choice is yours.
    • Budget constraints. Your budget will of course be a huge consideration, and it’s important to consider the long-term costs too—what would the repair/maintenance costs be, and how much will fuel set you back? Questions of this nature will all need to be answered, but of course, given the nature of these vehicles you should never put price before quality.
    • New or used? You might be tempted to opt for a brand new model, perhaps thinking that you’ll be getting a better standard of quality, but in reality this may not always be the case. A lot of used forklifts are just as high-quality as their newer counterparts having been carefully refurbished to be brought back up to standards, but because they’re used you could save a fortune when compared to buying a brand new model. So why choose anything else?

These are just a few considerations you’ll need to bear in mind when deciding on the right forklift for your environment, and if you’re looking for a supplier that can accommodate you’ve come to the right place. Here at Trucks Direct UK Limited we’ve got a fantastic selection of used forklift trucks for you to choose from to ensure there’s something for everyone and every environment necessary, so take a look around and you’ll soon have the used forklift that meets your every requirement.

  • Getting the most from your forklifts with effective training...

There are plenty of superb forklift trucks on the market these days and, as long as you know what you’re looking for, you should succeed in finding versions that tick each and every one of your boxes.

Whether you’re after diesel, electric or gas forklifts, you should be able to find them here at Trucks Direct.

However, if you’re to make the very most of vehicles like this, it’s really important that you ensure your drivers have had all the training they need. Of course, there is a certain legal minimum standard that all drivers must attain before they can control trucks. However, it’s worth going above and beyond this and making sure your drivers’ skills are the very best they can be. This helps ensure that they can operate the vehicles as efficiently and effectively as possible, which is great news for you bottom line.

    Best forklift driver

One man who’s certainly in the know when it comes to forklift driving is Darren Taylor. Later this month, the 29-year-old warehouse worker will compete to be crowned the best forklift truck driver in Britain, the Burton Mail reports.

He is taking part in the Road Transport Industry Training Board’s operator of the year competition, which comprises a series of challenges to be staged at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. In total, 40 drivers will test their skills and the top ten will go on to the grand final, due to be held in Telford, Shropshire on September 20th.

A bit like the Crystal Maze

Commenting on the challenge awaiting him, Mr Taylor said: “The competition is a bit like the television show The Crystal Maze, but for forklifts. It’s like an assault course we have to do while driving a fork-lift truck.”

He was working at a Boots warehouse when he was invited to take part in the competition. About this, he remarked: “When I worked at Boots, they did a re-test (of forklift abilities) to make sure I was up to grade. Afterwards I was contacted to ask whether I would like to take part in the operator of the year competition.”

“I was quite shocked really. This was only a week or two ago. I’ve been looking the competition up online so I know the kind of things people have had to do in previous competitions.”

    Health and safety

The expert, who has held a forklift truck licence since 2001, said: “I am very conscious of health and safety. Sometimes you can’t avoid accidents, that’s just the nature of the job, but there’s a lot you can do to improve safety. I’ve been driving forklifts pretty well, I’d say, because I’m a stickler for health and safety. A workman is only as good as his tools.”

    Training

As well as selling used forklifts, we also offer novice training courses. To get onto them, candidates should be over the minimum school leaving age and have reasonable degree of physical fitness. No previous experience of operating lift trucks is required. We also offer refresher courses for candidates who have received adequate formal basic operator training.

To find out more about this training, or to check out our used forklift selection, just take a look around our website.

  • Your pick of electric forklifts...

Over the years, the range of forklift trucks on the market has grown and there are now so many products available for you to choose from that you might not know where to start. As well as diesel versions, there are advanced electric and gas versions for you to peruse.

Like many bosses, you might be tempted by electric forklift trucks. These vehicles are associated with a range of advantages that could make them ideal for your organisation.

    Benefits

You’re certainly not alone in wanting an electric model. Trucks like these are now among the most popular and this is down to a range of factors. For example, they are highly versatile and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Unlike diesel trucks, they don’t have emissions that could pose a risk to your employees in an enclosed area. This has the added benefit of making them more eco-friendly. Also, they are quiet, meaning they are more pleasant to be around.

In addition, because of their weight and concentrated battery mass, they are generally more manoeuvrable that their engine powered equivalents. This could be especially important if you have a limited space in which to operate the trucks.

Your drivers may also find the trucks easier to drive because they only have an accelerator and a brake pedal, unless they are hydrastically powered. In other words, there is no clutch pedal or inching pedal, and the operator does not have to rev the engine for fast lifts or hill starting.

    Battery care

If you’re to get the most from your electric trucks, it’s important that you care for their batteries. If you buy from us here at Trucks Direct, we’ll provide you with a 12-month onsite battery warranty, helping to boost your peace of mind.

In addition, all of our electric trucks come with a fully tested battery charger that can be either single or three phase to suit your electrical supply.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the cost of recharging batteries overnight on low-rate tariff is considerably less than replacing gas bottles or filling a tank with diesel fuel.

    Plenty of choice

One thing’s for sure, if you come here looking for used forklifts, you’ll benefit from an impressive selection. We sell trucks made by many of the biggest names in the industry, including Toyota, Linde, Hyster and Caterpillar.

We have hundreds of different models for you to peruse and you can be sure that all the vehicles on our website are our own. We don’t advertise trucks that we don’t have or other dealers’ stock.

    Top quality and great value

Regardless of the type of electric used forklift you buy from us, you’ll benefit from superb value for money and you can rest assured the vehicle will be of the highest quality. This means you can make purchases with real confidence.

To see our impressive selection of trucks for yourself, just take a look around our website or come to our showroom near Birmingham city centre.
