It was 1917 when Eugene Clark invented the Tructractor, designed to be used in warehouses and factories. However, Clark’s invention didn’t have any forks and had to be manually unloaded and loaded.
Yale jumped on the back of this invention, and in 1923, created the first electric truck. The truck is close to a modern day forklift in its design.
Fuelling Forklifts
Manufacturers began experimenting with how to fuel forklifts during the Second World War. Gas-powered electric motors were popular in 1940 and were what most forklifts were powered with.
In 1942, Clark created the first battery-operated forklift; a full charge would last a whole day. However, in 1947, the introduction of diesel-powered forklifts meant the power and lifting ability could be increased.
