What is the Difference Between a Manual and an Automatic Forklift?
What is a Manual Forklift?
A manual forklift is the most simplistic model available. Manual forklifts are powered by hydraulics, lifting materials using a hand pump. The forklift is controlled by a set of levers, used by the operator to manoeuvre the machine.
The hydraulic system uses oil to power the machine, with a hand pump that pushes oil into the system. Then, this raises the forks and lifts the materials.
What is an Automatic Forklift?
An automatic forklift differs from a manual model, as it uses an electronic system to control the machine. This is powered by batteries and fuel, whereas a manual model is not.
Automatic forklifts are more complex machines, that use electronic parts and sensors. The automatic forklift is becoming more commonplace in modern warehouses and logistic environments.
What are the Advantages of Both?
As you can see there are some distinct advantages to both manual and automatic forklift trucks.
Should I use a Manual or an Automatic Forklift?
The two types of forklifts are better suited to different applications. For example:
You should use a manual forklift when…
- There is a light load
- The load does not need to be moved very far
- There is an experienced operator for the job, who can handle the extra operational effort
- You’re in a sensitive environment
You should use an automatic forklift when…
- You are dealing with a heavy load
- The load needs to be moved over a longer distance
- Your operator is less experienced, and cannot handle the weight of a heavier load
- You’re handling a large-scale project
