A multi-directional forklift is a materials-handling vehicle that can travel forwards, backwards and sideways without needing to turn. This is achieved through steerable wheels that can rotate to change the direction of travel.
Unlike a standard forklift, which requires wide aisles to reposition long loads, a multi-directional forklift carries them laterally, making it ideal for narrow-aisle warehouses. It is most commonly used to handle long, awkward materials such as timber, steel sections, piping and aluminium profiles. This is where a conventional forklift would struggle.
Both a multi-directional forklift and a sideloader handle long loads in narrow aisles, but they work differently. A sideloader carries its load to one side of the truck and travels along the aisle in one direction, like a train on a track.
A multi-directional forklift is more versatile. It can travel in all four directions and operate in open areas as well as narrow aisles. This makes it a better all-round solution if your warehouse handles a mix of standard and long loads.
If your operation is exclusively long-load, high-volume work in fixed aisles, a sideloader may suffice. But if you need flexibility, a multi-directional forklift is the stronger choice.
There is no formal government-issued licence for multi-directional forklifts in the UK. However, accredited training and certification are a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Training is typically accredited to RTITB standard, which is the leading awarding body for industrial machinery in the UK. Certificates are valid for three years before a refresher is required. Courses vary in length depending on experience:
