FAQs
Do Trucks Direct UK Supply Safety Equipment for Order Pickers?
Trucks Direct UK supplies harnesses, lanyards, safety gates and dead-man switches for mid and high-level order picker hire. These are standard safety accessories that keep your operators protected from falls from height and accidents while using the order picker.
Do I Need a Specific Certification to Operate an Order Picker?
Yes, but the certification you need depends on the type of order picker you operate. As of January 2026, the ABA updated the certification requirements, which may restrict your use of certain models. For low-level order pickers (lifting to 300mm), you must have an E0 certification. For mid and high-level order pickers, you need an E1 and E2 certification. But a new category (vertical stock pickers) now requires an SP1 certification, which did not exist in 2025.
If you have an E2 certificate, you are usually qualified to operate an E1 and E0 machine. However, if you only have an E0 certificate, you must undergo additional training. It is also important to note that an E2 certification does not automatically qualify you to operate an SP1 machine.
Can I Operate an Order Picker Outside?
Standard order pickers for indoor use. They use small, hard wheels that are unsuitable for outdoor use. Additionally, they utilise rail and wire guidance systems, which require perfectly even flooring to function correctly. These guidance systems allow operators to move the order picker through very narrow aisles without risk of collision. This feature enables the operator to focus on retrieving items, eliminating the need to drive.
What is the Load Capacity of an Order Picker?
Order pickers have a general maximum load capacity of 450kg to 1,360kg. However, when operating the order picker, you must consider that the maximum load capacity includes the load and the operator. Similar to every other type of material handling equipment, the higher you raise the lift, the lower the load capacity becomes. Your order picker will have its specific load capacity clearly stated on its data plate to prevent confusion.
