LOLER Certificates and Thorough Examinations are mandatory annual assessments. Health and Safety Legislation requires both as evidence of compliance.

What does LOLER stand for?

LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations. Simply put, a Thorough Examination, or LOLER, is a bit like a car’s MOT.

Both assessments certify that, at the time of testing, all components are in a safe condition. Just as a car has an MOT and a 10,000-mile service, a Thorough Examination is separate from regular maintenance. Thorough Examinations are legislative and are often not included in maintenance agreements.
